Chopin: The Four Ballades, Berceuse, Barcarolle, Scherzo No. 4(more) »rank: 91989by: Evgeni Kissin
: essential recording:Ever since the start of his career as a sensational child prodigy, Kissin has displayed a strong affinity for the music of Chopin, in concert and on numerous records. Here he performs a program of substantial pieces: the four ballades, written several years apart and not conceived as a group, which nevertheless complement one another through their contrasts as well as their shared narrative and descriptive atmosphere; the lovely, peaceful berceuse; the swaying, rocking barcarolle; and the brilliant, witty Scherzo No. 4. Throughout, Kissin's effortless virtuosity, his beautiful, singing tone, his command of voicing, dynamics, touch, color, and legato are phenomenal; ... |

Live from the Concertgebouw, 1978 & 1979(more) »rank: 57995by: Johann Sebastian Bach, Bela Bartok, Frédéric Chopin, Alberto Ginastera, Sergey Prokofiev, Domenico Scarlatti, Martha Argerich
: :Throughout her lengthy artistic career, pianist Martha Argerich has experienced many heights and depths: moments of 'crisis' in which she hasn't always seemed prepared to offer the full extent of her artistic insights, but also many, many times when she has managed simultaneously to come into her own and to completely lose herself in music-making. Fortunately it's the latter snapshot of Argerich's career that this CD captures, drawing from two live recitals Argerich gave at Amsterdam's Concertgebouw in 1978 and 1979. They document the pianist's overwhelming gifts, with all the artistic characteristics that have made her so revered. The program is quite eclectic, ... |

Debussy: Preludes; L'Isle joyeuse; Chopin: Ballade No. 3; Scherzo No. 4; Etc.(more) »rank: 220727from: BBC Legends
: :Here's an unexpected treasure, indeed. Sviatoslav Richter was one of the great musicians of the last century, and had one of the broadest repertoires of any, but Chopin and Debussy are not composers particularly associated with him (though, interestingly enough, he listed them among his favorites). Sometimes his Chopin could be overly bold and strident; here, however, from the lilting opening of the Third Ballade, through to the electricity of his two madcap readings of the last of the Op. 10 Études, he is in electrifying form. His Debussy, too, is deeply compelling: less a pulpy wash of indeterminate sounds, swamped by overindulgent use ... |
