Fire & Ice(more) »rank: 12398by: Sarah Chang, Placido Domingo
: :Here's a handy collection of popular works for violin and orchestra. The title apparently refers to the mix of warmly romantic music, like the Massenet Méditation, and flashy virtuoso stuff, like the Sarasate Carmen Fantasy and Zigeunerweisen. Sarah Chang excels in both areas. Her Dvorák and Beethoven Romances are sweetly sung, while the insanely virtuosic Tzigane by Ravel, with its wild staccato and chordal effects, she tosses off without breaking a sweat. Except for the romanticized Bach Air from the Suite No. 3, there are no stylistic transgressions, and the mix of fiery virtuoso fare and romantic slower beauties keeps interest alive throughout. ... |

Heifetz Showpieces(more) »rank: 64063from: RCA
: :Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole is a riot of instrumental color and virtuoso challenges; exactly Jascha Heifetz's piece of cake, as are Saint-Saëns's Havanaise, Chausson's Poème and Sarasate's Zigeunerweise (Gypsy Tunes). The sound is pre-stereo but well detailed. One movement of the Lalo is left out, but there are plenty of fireworks in the four that remain. --Joe McLellan |

Mozart: The Violin Concertos; Sinfonia Concertante(more) »rank: 10198from: Deutsche Grammophon
: : Fans of Anne-Sophie Mutter know what to expect of her. Her technique is dazzling, and she takes an individualistic, Romantic approach to whatever she plays --occasionally inundating the music with more weight than is necessary--and her tone is luminous and grand. This 2-CD set of all of Mozart's Violin Concerti and the fantastic Sinfonia Concertante K. 364 (wherein she's joined by violist Yuri Bashmet) exemplifies all of these traits. If you like your Mozart airy and delicate you've come to the wrong place; if you like some fine showy virtuosity in fast movements and long, lush statements in the slow movements, you'll ... |

Vivaldi: The Four Seasons(more) »rank: 13120from: Deutsche Grammophon
: :While it may not be the most rewarding way to approach this music in the long run, having four star violinists dish up a season apiece is a lot of fun, especially if you're interested in comparing styles and sounds. Mintz is bright and wiry; Perlman rich, brilliant and intense; Zukerman dark and suave; and Stern has that marvelous, warm, 'old-school' sound with an almost vocal vibrato. And the violins of the Israel Philharmonic? They play as though every one of them could step up and take a solo, no doubt because having four luminaries on the stage made them want to give ... |

Critics and audiences didn't seem too happy with Back to the Future, Part II, the inventive, perhaps too clever sequel. Director Zemeckis and cast bent over backwards to add layers of time-travel complication, and while it surely exercises the brain it isn't necessarily funny in the same way that its predecessor was. It's well worth a visit, though, just to appreciate the imagination that went into it, particularly in a finale that has Marty watching his own actions from the first film. --Tom Keogh
Shot back-to-back with the second chapter in the trilogy, Back to the Future, Part III is less hectic than that film and has the same sweet spirit of the first, albeit in a whole new setting. This time, Marty ends up in the Old West of 1885, trying to prevent the death of mad scientist Christopher Lloyd at the hands of gunman Buford "Mad Dog" Tannen (Thomas F. Wilson, who had a recurring role as the bully Biff). Director Zemeckis successfully blends exciting special effects with the traditions of a Western and comes up with something original and fun. --Tom Keogh
