: :Robert Shaw learned from Arturo Toscanini, and in his stupendous 1987 recording for Telarc he managed to surpass the master on some points. He is unerring in his pacing and staging of climaxes, and draws phrasing and dynamics from the chorus that other conductors can only dream of. Points are made with exhilarating effect throughout the account: never has the bass drum in the Dies irae been as splendidly hammered as here, and the whooping brass in the Tuba mirum is breathtaking. The all-American solo quartet sounds a bit driven, especially the light-voiced Susan Dunn ...

: :It is only natural that players of instruments with a limited repertoire should resort to transcriptions, citing a long line of arrangers from Bach to Liszt to Heifetz. However, the suitability of the material is as important as the skill of the transcriber, and you don't have to be a 'purist' to object to some of Balsom's choices. Some of the transcriptions are her own, some are by Julian Milone, a violinist, who also provided the orchestrations of the non-orchestral accompaniments. Unfortunately they sound unnatural compared to Mozart's, in an aria from his Die Zauberflöte, and ...

: essential recording:One of the most frequently mentioned 'favorite' works of Bach, the B Minor Mass is not really a functional liturgical work, but an assemblage of movements written over a period of many years. Its grand scale is certainly awesome, but its musical and spiritual unity is more remarkable, considering its origin and the fact that it contains several different compositional styles--not to mention some of Bach's most profound and beautiful music. Performing this work and preserving a sense of its grand design while bringing out the considerable musical details is a challenge that ...

The KX-TGA270S from Panasonic is an add-on extension handset designed for use with KX-TG2700S, KX-TG2720S, KX-TG2730S, or KX-TG2740S Expandable Cordless Systems. By utilizing the 2.4 GHz frequency band, as well as Frequency Hopping Digital Spread Spectrum (FHSS) technology, the KX-TGA270S provides crisp, clear reception even at significant distance from the base.

An illuminated keypad makes dialing easy in the dark, while a headset jack gives you the option of hands-free operation. Four-way conferencing allows you to talk with multiple people, while a two-way intercom lets you communicate with family and friends near the other phone.

With call waiting, you won't miss any important calls, while Caller ID (with subscription to telephone company services) means you can avoid those calls you would rather miss. A great way to expand your current Panasonic phone system, the KX-TG2700S also features six selectable ring tones as well as a handset volume control. Panasonic also provides a one-year parts and labor warranty.

Wonderful Town is a terrifically fun musical, but do you really need this recording? The answer will be yes if you fall within one of these two categories: (a) You collect recordings of the show and must own them all or (b) you're a huge fan of Brooke Shields. The actress replaced Donna Murphy in the lead role of the 2003 Broadway revival, and did a creditable job bringing Ruth Sherwood to gawky life during her five-month run. Shields performs over the same instrumental tracks you can hear on the revival's prime recording. (Jennifer Hope Wills replaces Jennifer Westfeldt as Eileen Sherwood; the rest of the cast is unchanged.) From a purely vocal point of view, the switch wasn't an upgrade--Murphy is among Broadway's best stylists after all--though Shields is far from being an embarrassment. She may not have the technique, but her comic gusto is winning. Still, this CD remains for completists only. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
