Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde(more) »rank: 8979from: EMI Classics
: essential recording:Mahler considered The Song of the Earth his most personal work, and indeed it is one of his greatest and most moving. Bernstein: Symphony No. 3 ('Kaddish'); Chichester Psalms(more) »rank: 12940from: Sony
: :Leonard Bernstein's Kaddish, Symphony No. 3, from 1963 is probably his most famous. It's dedicated to the memory of John F. Kennedy, and comprises spoken and sung texts from Jewish prayers for the dead. It's quite dramatic, very listenable, and not at all pretentious, as some critics have avowed. It ranks with Shostakovich's harrowing Symphony No. 14 and deserves more attention than it usually gets. Which is damned little. The same goes for Bernstein's Chichester Psalms (1964). It's a very engaging choral work that celebrates the practice of psalmody or choral festivals, a kind of ... |

Essential Bach(more) »rank: 7524from: Decca
: :It is not possible to fit 36 Bach masterpieces on two CDs, so what Essential Bach does is present individual movements from across a range of the composer's work. The anthology is clearly aimed at the newcomer, and the absence of booklet notes to put the music in context is disappointing. We are only given titles, performers, and what films the extracts have been featured in, from Rollerball to The English Patient. On the plus side, most if not all of the music is instantly recognizable, by melody if not by name. Everything from the ... |

Brahms: The Complete Symphonies / Karajan, Berlin PO(more) »rank: 4209from: Deutsche Grammophon
: :These 1977-78 recordings are Karajan's best Brahms--better than his somewhat mannered digital set. The Berlin Philharmonic, as ever, is amazingly smooth and accomplished, playing with great class without losing any power--as an example, just listen to the finale of the second symphony. DG's engineers have turned this always-good recording into something truly magnificent to hear, and, at the price, this is a sure bet. --Robert Levine |
