: essential recording:Once again, Bulgarian mezzo-soprano Vesselina Kasarova proves that one can forget even the fabulous Cecilia Bartoli. With a voice at least twice that of Bartoli's, with the same agility in fast music, and capable of a similar number of shadings from ppp to fff (Bartoli can go from ppppp to f), Kasarova here tackles some of the same repertory as her Italian counterpart. We discover that her Cenerentola is much more easily wounded and far gentler, and maybe even more appealing than Bartoli's. But forget comparisons and just listen to Kasarova's infectious, seductive scene from L'Italiana and the amazing, breakneck finale ...

: 's Best of 1998:While many of his contemporaries had reduced opera to empty displays of vocal prowess, Bellini crafted the gorgeous melodies of bel canto style with a poet's intuition for character and dramatic truth. This recording gives ample evidence of both qualities, above all in the tender, yearning, and almost unbearably poignant blend of Vesselina Kasarova and Eva Mei's voices as Romeo and Juliet, respectively. Roberto Abbado brings loving but unobtrusive authority to the score. Also included is a disc of scenes from a similar opera composed by Nicola Vaccai and long performed in place of Bellini's music--a fascinating vantage point from ...

: :Ours is an age happily rich in lyric mezzo-sopranos who can handle the challenges of the coloratura repertoire of Rossini and Mozart. One of the most exciting is Bulgarian mezzo Vesselina Kasarova, who combines beauty of voice, intelligence of interpretation, and dramatic conviction in one very talented package. Here she is in her element, as a passionate Dorabella, an ardent Idamante, and--making a good case for a mezzo in roles usually given to a soubrette--a very sexy Zerlina, among others. The instrumental-only interludes weren't really necessary, but at least they fit in with the rest of the album. --Sarah Bryan Miller

: :The title 'A Portrait' would suggest some sort of a cohesive look at this talented Bulgarian mezzo-soprano. But she is so astonishingly versatile, one wonders if there are at least two singers at work here. Her more athletic coloratura moments in the Rossini and Donizetti arias would suggest some sort of slavic Cecila Bartoli while her more soulful, lyrical moments in Gluck's Orfeo would suggest a heavier voice like Kathleen Ferrier. Could it be that she has it all--or at least as much as one could hope for in a single singer? --David Patrick Stearns

: :Granted, the plot is silly and slow-moving, the characters are strictly cardboard, and the role of the male romantic lead was written for a female mezzo-soprano. But the splendidly florid music, and amazing opportunities for bel canto vocalism make up for it. This recording, using the critical edition, is outstanding on the vocal front. The stunning Bulgarian mezzo-soprano Vesselina Kasarova has a rich, full tone and clean, accurate runs. She is well partnered by Eva Mei, whose bright but effective soprano carries a good characterization of a dramatically rather thankless role. Tenor Ramon Vargas nails his coloratura and possesses a ringing tone. They ...

: :Musically and in its plot and atmosphere, Oberon owes something to Mozart's Magic Flute. But Mozart's crazy mixed-up masterpiece ventures just inside the borders of Romanticism. The last opera of Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) goes deeply into Romantic atmosphere and mystique. Its rather disjointed but colorful libretto magically takes a medieval French knight (tenor Peter Seiffert) and the Caliph of Baghdad's daughter (soprano Inga Nielsen) through a series of trials (shipwreck on a desert island, capture by pirates, enslavement, and sexual harassment) to test the strength of their love. The music is magnificent, looking ahead to Wagner as well as back to ...

On her eighth studio album, Damita Jo--the title lifted from her middle name--Janet Jackson teams up with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis once again on what is perhaps the most feverish album in her two decade long career. Whether she's taking the listener on a torrid excursion in the four song island suite, or boasting of her sexual prowess on "Sexhibition's" word games lyrics, where she tells fans "relax, it's just sex," the singer tries hard--maybe too hard--to establish herself as a sexual avatar with portfolio. But in "Strawberry Bounce," she seems more like a pole dancer in stilettos than a social revolutionary, as she catalogs the way she plans to make her inamorato lose control, and she just sounds silly on "Moist," which extols the female orgasm. Instead, the best moments on the album are when Jackson comes off as saucy and winsome instead of a heavy breather, like on the down-tempo "Thinkin' Bout My Ex," her collaboration with Babyface, which seems lifted right out of her autobiography, and on the athletic Prince clone "Just A Little While." The title track is Jackson's own version of J-Lo's "Jenny On the Block," and she sounds just as insincere as Lopez when she tried to convince us that she was just an ordinary neighborhood diva. Instead, Janet’s much more persuasive when she joins up with hip-hop savant Kanye West on "My Baby," pairing her breathy, little girl vocals to his sharp, focused rap. Then and only then does Damita Jo sound like love can actually trump sex. --Jaan Uhelszki
