:Album Details:EMI Classics Pianist Leif Ove Andsnes and Virgin Classics' String Quartet, the Artemis, have Joined their Formidable Musical Forces to Record Two of the Most Beautiful Piano Quintets of the Romantic Chamber Music Repertoire. Their Collaboration Makes for What Will Certainly Be Considered a Landmark Recording, Bringing a New Vigour to These Well-known Masterpieces. The Programme Couples Two Major Piano Quintets by Brahms and Schumann. Brahms' Piano Quintet in F Minor Op.34 Is the Composer's Only Piano Quintet and is Considered One of his Finest Compositions. Bartok: The Piano Concertos

(more) »rank: 41896

by: Pierre Boulez, Bela Bartok, Zimerman, Andsnes, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra

: :Pierre Boulez, always a sympathetic conductor of Bartók’s music, here leads three different orchestras and three different soloists in a highly recommendable disc of the composer's complete piano concertos. The First is a jagged, percussive piece reminiscent of Bartók's earlier Dance Suite in its driving rhythms. Like the Second Concerto's, the slow movement is one of his typically mysterious 'night' pieces, with lightly tapping percussion accompanying the piano's ghostly entry and winds adding to the otherworldly effect in the central section. Soloist Krystian Zimerman plays it magnificently. The Second Concerto is no less challenging, but scored more transparently with Baroque-inspired counterpoint. Again, propulsive ...

Grieg: Lyric Pieces (Performed on Grieg's Piano)

(more) »rank: 19810

from: EMI Classics

: :Grieg's 66 Lyric Pieces range from simple pretty tunes like the early 'Arietta' that opens this disc to more extended pieces like the dashing 'Wedding Day at Troldhaugen' to impressionistic miniature tone poems like the late 'Summer Evening.' Here, Andsnes plays 24 of them, well-chosen to cover a representative selection from the complete sets. He plays them beautifully, with a lovely tone, virtuoso polish when such is called for, as in the express ride of 'March of the Trolls,' and poetic depth of feeling, as in 'The Brook,' where in his interpretation you can almost smell the grass and see the light ripples ...

Leif Ove Andsnes ~ Haydn - Piano Sonatas

(more) »rank: 109046

by: Joseph Haydn, Leif Ove Andsnes

: :Leif Ove Andsnes, obviously one of the superior artists on the current piano scene, deserves credit for paying attention to Haydn. Every one of these sonatas is a masterpiece, and every one is played with Andsnes's typical intelligence and scrupulous detail. You could virtually take dictation from these performances, except for some missing repeats. But it's hard to feel that Andsnes identifies as strongly with this music as he does with Brahms. As fine as this playing is, it has an aura of objectivity that keeps the results from being completely satisfying. Although this disc does not lessen my admiration for the pianist, ...

Schumann & Grieg: Piano Concertos; Leif Ove Andsnes

(more) »rank: 80063

by: Leif Ove Andsnes, Edvard Grieg, Robert Schumann, Mariss Jansons, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra

: :Many great pianists have already recorded this now-traditional coupling. Having proven himself to belong in the company of the greats, Andsnes now gets his chance. He has a decided viewpoint on this music, stressing the lyrical elements with some gorgeous tone and phrasing, yet capturing plenty of drive and excitement when required. Jansons seems to challenge his soloist with very energetic readings of the orchestral parts: lots of tympani and broad dynamic contrasts. The collaboration works quite well, and if you don't already have half a dozen CDs with this coupling already in your collection, this one is definitely worth considering. It does ...

: :Released in honor of the centenary of Grieg's death, this is a loving tribute to Norway's greatest composer by a compatriot and renowned interpreter of his music. The album includes reissues of Andsnes' award-winning recording of the 'Concerto' with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Lyric Pieces, recorded in Grieg's home on his own piano, and a new recording of the 'Ballade Op. 24,' an unfamiliar piece Andsnes only recently added to his repertoire and is performing in public for the first time this season. Dark, brooding, and melancholy, it was written when Grieg, despite his growing international fame, was facing personal and creative crises. ...

: : A great player can give meaning and substance even to lightweight miniatures. Andsnes says that his musical 'horizon,' at first limited to 'big, important' music, opened to the appreciation of the short 'salon' pieces and arrangements assembled on this record only as he got older, though they had accompanied him since childhood. The program features original compositions and transcriptions, including many familiar favorites. They span several centuries and come from every corner of Europe. Andsnes' virtuosity is breath-taking, his tone is beautiful, and his legato sings regardless of the accompanying texture. Above all, he captures every style, idiom, and mood. Andsnes' phrasing, ...

Rachmaninov: Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 2

by: Sergey Rachmaninoff, Leif Ove Andsnes, Antonio Pappano, Berlin Philharmonic

: : Leif Ove Andsnes is a great pianist, equally at home in solo and chamber music, on stage and disc, in all styles and national idioms. His virtuosity is so unobtrusive, his control of touch and nuance so natural that the music seems to flow through him directly to the listener. His runs have a brilliant, feathery delicacy, but are always part of the musical fabric; his chords are powerful but never harsh. He brings to the Rachmaninov concertos on this record not only romantic sweep, grandeur, vitality, and expressive freedom, but an almost classical purity of line and clarity of texture. Only ...

The Academy Award winner for Best Picture, Best Director Robert Zemeckis, and Best Actor Tom Hanks, this unlikely story of a slow-witted but good-hearted man somehow at the center of the pivotal events of the 20th century is a funny and heartwarming epic. Hanks plays the title character, a shy Southern boy in love with his childhood best friend (Robin Wright) who finds that his ability to run fast takes him places. As an All-Star football player he meets John F. Kennedy; as a soldier in Vietnam he's a war hero; and as a world champion Ping-Pong player he's hailed by Richard Nixon. Becoming a successful shrimp-boat captain, he still yearns for the love of his life, who takes a quite different and much sadder path in life. The visual effects incorporating Hanks into existing newsreel footage is both funny and impressive, but the heart of the film lies in its sweet love story and in the triumphant performance of Hanks as an unassuming soul who savors the most from his life and times. --Robert Lane

Gina Prince-Bythewood, a former college athlete, puts a spin on this one-on-one tale of Love and Basketball. Sanaa Lathan (The Best Man) is the fiercely driven, hot-tempered Monica, a tomboy who gives her all for basketball. Omar Epps (The Mod Squad) is Quincy, an NBA player's son who has pro dreams of his own. Next-door neighbors since first grade, they start as rivals (she flabbergasts the boy by outplaying him in a game of driveway pickup) and age into best friends and lovers. The romantic complications follow a familiar game plan, but the film throws a fascinating spotlight onto the contrast between men's and women's basketball. While Quincy plays college ball on huge courts to cheering, sold-out crowds, we see Monica's sweat, tears, and sheer physical dedication in front of tiny audiences in small gyms and second-rate auditoriums.

The story is pointedly set in the late 1980s, years before the establishment of the WNBA, so Monica's prospects for pro ball lie exclusively in Europe, while Quincy steps into the pros at home. It's a pleasure to see a character as passionate and fully developed as Monica, and Lathan gives a fiery portrayal (she had never played ball before the film, but you'd never tell from her performance). Prince-Bythewood favors her struggle over Quincy's and opens our eyes to her unique challenges with a sharp, savvy contrast. Alfre Woodard costars as Monica's harping mom (always trying to get her to be more ladylike) and Dennis Haysbert is Quincy's philandering father. Hoops fan Spike Lee produced. --Sean Axmaker
