Lorraine Hunt Lieberson sings Peter Lieberson 'Neruda Songs'(more) »rank: 11337from: Trumpet Swan
:Album Description:This album serves as a profoundly moving tribute to the artistry of mezzo-soprano Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, who passed away on July 3rd, 2006 after a long bout with cancer, at the age of 52. It is also a testament to the remarkable personal and musical relationship the singer cultivated with her composer husband Peter Lieberson, who adapted five sonnets from Chilean poet Pablo Neruda for this work, jointly commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony. : This beautiful, touching cycle of five love songs on poems by Pablo Neruda was composed by Peter Lieberson for his wife, Lorraine Hunt ... |

Lorraine Hunt Lieberson - Bach Cantatas BWV 82 and 199(more) »rank: 15464from: Nonesuch
: :Lorraine Hunt Lieberson has been scantily represented on CD, and that makes this gorgeous, deeply felt release all the more valuable. Here she sings two Bach cantatas composed for solo voice. Her mezzo is not particularly heavy, but it can darken or lighten expressively, and she uses its dusky qualities handsomely. Ich habe genug was originally written for solo bass, but Bach revised it a few years later. The way the voice works with and around a solo oboe (amid the accompanying strings) is beautiful. Of particular note are the aria 'Schlummert ein'--a lullaby which Lieberson sings with a long, sustained, hushed tone--and ... |

Lorraine Hunt Lieberson - Handel Arias(more) »rank: 20435by: Lorraine Hunt
: :If you think you've heard Handel's 'Ombra mai fu' (known as his 'Largo') so often, and in so many different arrangements, and sung by so many different voices, that you can no longer be moved or surprised by it, think again. This CD of Handel arias, mostly from his Theodora or the cantata La Lucrezia, ends with 'Ombra mai fu,' and as sung by Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, it is so tender, so beautiful, so impeccably shaded, that you'll think you're hearing it for the first time. But that's only four of this disc's 67 minutes---a follow-up to Hunt Lieberson's extraordinarily successful CD of ... |

Spanish Love Songs(more) »rank: 7983from: Bridge Records, Inc.
: :The late Metropolitan Opera star Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, partnered by the brilliant young tenor Joseph Kaiser, and pianists Steven Blier and Michael Barrett, gave a concert of Spanish Love Songs in 2004. Their memorable and wide-ranging New York Festival of Song program includes Spanish and Spanish-related songs by Granados, Turina, Ravel, Schumann, Wolf, Sondheim and others. The release of Spanish Love Songs coincides with the Metropolitan Opera debut of Joseph Kaiser, singing the role of Romeo in Gounod's Romeo et Juliette, conducted by Placido Domingo. This will be followed immediately by Met performances singing Tamino in The Magic Flute. (Kaiser's Tamino has ... |

John Adams - El Nino / Hunt-Lieberson, Upshaw, W. White, Nagano(more) »rank: 65855from: Nonesuch
: 's Best of 2001:To clear up one thing first: this is not about the El Niño weather system that hits the western Pacific every few years. Instead, this is a rather beautifully done Nativity Oratorio by John Adams, filled with his trademark dancing minimalist rhythms and tuneful melodies. The text is in Spanish, English, and Latin, and comes from both New World and Old World sources, all centering on the birth of Christ. Particular kudos must go to the three principals: Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, mezzo-soprano; Dawn Upshaw, soprano; and Willard White, baritone. Even though there are moments when White's baritone threatens to dominate, ... |

Faure - Pelléas et Mélisande ~ Dolly ~ Après un rêve ~ Pavane ~ Elégie / Hunt, BSO, Ozawa(more) »rank: 71726by: Gabriel Fauré, Seiji Ozawa, Lorraine Hunt, Tanglewood Festival Chorus, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Jules Eskin
: :Seiji Ozawa has repeatedly shown a flair for the French repertory, and here he delivers an unusually passionate reading of Fauré's masterpiece, one that exhibits great sensitivity and a fine feel for pacing. Ozawa is clearly drawn to the tragic element in the music, and is most persuasive in the score's outer movements. A point of particular interest is the inclusion of a song entitled 'Chanson de Mélisande,' which Fauré set directly in English. There is some wonderfully coloristic solo work from the Bostonians in these performances, and the orchestral discipline is excellent. Although the violins seem to have been recorded in rather ... |

Music of Peter Lieberson (Rilke Songs, The Six Realms, Horn Concerto)(more) »rank: 81189from: Bridge Records, Inc.
: :Peter Lieberson's is certainly one of the most refreshing compositional voices to have entered the repertoire of the world s leading orchestras during the past several decades. Lieberson's music ranges broadly: his compositions address the listener with a generous variety of character, while his harmonic palette expresses richly developed hues of both tonality and atonality. This CD features premiere recordings of three major works, opening with a setting of five Rilke poems written for the composer's wife, the much admired mezzo-soprano, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson. Ms. Hunt Lieberson performs alongside one of Peter Lieberson's most devoted champions, the estimable pianist, Peter Serkin. Their ... |
