Debussy: Complete Piano Music(more) »rank: 191121from: Nimbus Records
: :Martin Jones' Debussy cycle is more than complete, for he includes the composer's piano scores for his ballets, Khamma, Jeux, and La Boîte á Joujoux. Nimbus' slightly distant mike technique complements Jones' full-bodied sonority. Jones may not let you in on the music's deep, dark secrets, but his clear-headed guidance bespeaks sympathy and insight, whether in the early character pieces or cryptic Prelude and Etude cycles. His quicksilver fingerwork is buttressed with fiber and backbone, which keeps Debussy's impressionistic sound from dematerializing into vapor. Great playing, great price: Go for it! --Dan Davis |

Rubinstein Collection, Chopin, Preludes(more) »rank: 30916from: RCA
: :Artur Rubinstein was a Chopin specialist and recorded the composer's work often throughout his very long career. But he only recorded the complete 24 Preludes once, in 1946, and that is the recording we have here. (All the other material on the CD was recorded the same year, albeit at different times.) The Preludes are wonderful little works, none longer than four and a half minutes. Rubinstein is particularly masterful in the popular Nos. 19 and 20, which can sound too familiar; he makes us hear them anew. I also wouldn't want to be without the fiery No. 8 or the elegant No. ... |

Counterpoint Sings Noel(more) »rank: 121282by: Counterpoint, Robert De Cormier
: :Robert de Cormier, a graduate of Juilliard, acted as music director of the New York Choral Society for seventeen years. His other conducting engagements have taken him from Broadway and opera to the Berkshire Choral Institute, the Zimriya World Assembly of Choirs in Israel and numerous tours throughout the United States and Europe with the famed Robert de Cormier Singers. He has also been musical arranger and director for Harry Belafonte and Peter, Paul and Mary. In 2000 he established Counterpoint, an eleven-voice vocal ensemble based in Vermont. Here they sing a beautiful collection of carols covering many periods and cultures, celebrating ... |

The real joy of the set, however, is nine NBA playoff games presented as they were originally broadcast and almost in their entirety. They last about 90-100 minutes with TV introductions and post-game interviews, but minus halftime, commercials, and some slower moments. The games include such absolute classics as the game in which rookie Magic Johnson started at center in place of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and the 1987 "baby hook" game against the Boston Celtics. If you're used to watching current NBA games you might be tempted to just skip to the end, but it's surprisingly rewarding to watch the game develop, to watch the game's superstars strut their stuff (or see a couple of 1972 reserves named Phil Jackson and Pat Riley), and to observe how radically the sport has changed over the years. Variable picture quality and technical glitches are unavoidable (even the 2002 game looks washed out), but this is the first time complete or nearly complete NBA games have been available in the home-video era, and they probably still look better than the VHS tapes you've been saving over the years. Yes, it'd be easy to argue about which games from the Lakers' long history should have been included, and the highlight videos don't have a ton of replay value, but the NBA Dynasty series is a major milestone in archived sports. --David Horiuchi
