Ikos - Choral Music by Gorecki, Tavener, Pärt - interleaved by Plainchant(more) »rank: 42408by: Gregorian Chant, Henryk Gorecki, Arvo Part, John Tavener, Stephen Cleobury, Stuart Tibbs, David Goode, Guy Johnston, Choir of King's College - Cambridge
: :This CD intersperses, to wonderful effect, famous and beautifully sung plainchant melodies such as 'Ave Maris Stella' and 'Alma Redemptoris Mater' with sacred music by three well-known New Mystic composers. Arvo Pärt - A Tribute(more) »rank: 199154from: Harmonia Mundi Fr.
: :Those who aren't familiar with the music of Arvo Pärt are, to put it mildly, missing out on great beauty in their lives. His choral music is particularly moving. The pieces use what he refers to as a 'tintinnabuli' style, a bell-like series of triads seemingly always in motion. This CD, a tribute to him on his 70th birthday, is comprised of some of his finest and most popular works: The Berliner Messes, Magnificat, 'Which Was the Son of...' and others. It also presents a world-premiere recording of 'Dopo la vittoria' (Following the Victory), which concerns St Ambrose's Te Deum Laudamus, written after ... |

Continuing a fortuitous tradition of capturing the Sondheim legacy on video recordings, this performance was filmed before a live audience in Los Angeles during the 1982 national tour. Almost 20 years later, Hearn returned to the role opposite Patti LuPone in an acclaimed concert production. But Sweeney Todd is an especially compelling experience in this 1982 version, complete with the clever staging tricks (e.g., the barber's chair) and as close to the original cast as we're likely to see. --David Horiuchi
