Henryk Gorecki: String Quartet No. 3...songs are sung(more) »rank: 71078by: Kronos Quartet/ Henryk Gorecki
: : Henryk Mikolaj Górecki's String Quartet No. 3, Piesni Spiewaja ('...Songs Are Sung'), Op. 67--like its predecessors--was especially commissioned for and dedicated to the Kronos Quartet, whose impassioned, sympathetic performance burnishes it to a fare-thee-well. Approximately a decade of fits and starts separated the work's completion from its premiere, which finally took place in the composer's native Poland on October 15, 2005. Fans of his elegiac, incongruously popular Third Symphony likely somewhat startled by the spiky, dissonant virility that informs so much of Górecki's output. But the present piece would be an ideal follow-up for admirers of his more mystical, minimalist ... |

: :Seems like only yesterday the Kronos Quartet stepped up their career as musical mavericks with a coveted, wide-open contract with Nonesuch Records. Now it's Nonesuch's turn to give Kronos the big-package nod, gathering key works recorded by the group--from younger composers and time-tested veterans alike--into this 10-CD box set. As one might expect, the set is stuffed with contrasts, from the first CD, with its 11-part, upstepping John Adams suite and then the far more solemn Missa Syllabica from Arvo Pärt. Nearly 20 of these pieces here were composed expressly for Kronos, pitched and sculpted for their easily-racked mixture of straightforward ... |

Peace -- A Choral Album for Our Times(more) »rank: 89942from: Avie
: :''No praise can be too high for the singing of the 32 Handel and Haydn choristers.... [T]heir work is magnificent in tone, balance, diction, and feeling, and there is no sense of strain in even the most demanding, high-flying passages.'' -- Richard Dyer, Boston Globe, April 30, 2004 PEACE | a choral album for our times is one of the 21st century's most acclaimed and best-selling CDs of a cappella choral music. Peace offers a rich collection of popular a capella works including the popular Agnus Dei of Samuel Barber; John Tavener's Song for Athene; Randall Thompson's Alleluia; Elgar's Lux ... |

The real joy of the set, however, is nine NBA playoff games presented as they were originally broadcast and almost in their entirety. They last about 90-100 minutes with TV introductions and post-game interviews, but minus halftime, commercials, and some slower moments. The games include such absolute classics as the game in which rookie Magic Johnson started at center in place of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and the 1987 "baby hook" game against the Boston Celtics. If you're used to watching current NBA games you might be tempted to just skip to the end, but it's surprisingly rewarding to watch the game develop, to watch the game's superstars strut their stuff (or see a couple of 1972 reserves named Phil Jackson and Pat Riley), and to observe how radically the sport has changed over the years. Variable picture quality and technical glitches are unavoidable (even the 2002 game looks washed out), but this is the first time complete or nearly complete NBA games have been available in the home-video era, and they probably still look better than the VHS tapes you've been saving over the years. Yes, it'd be easy to argue about which games from the Lakers' long history should have been included, and the highlight videos don't have a ton of replay value, but the NBA Dynasty series is a major milestone in archived sports. --David Horiuchi
