Bach: Cello Suites Nos. 1-6(more) »rank: 72181from: Naxos
: essential recording:For many of us, Pablo Casals's legendary interpretation of Bach's six cello suites--the 1930s recordings that showcased these works as far more than mere finger exercises for cellists--are still definitive. Casals rediscovered these previously appreciated compositions and did his damnedest to illustrate their importance. Hence, his bold, romantic interpretations, which may lack subtlety but certainly not substance or grace. With Naxos's new remastering from audio producer Ward Marston, this bargain-priced recording makes a vast improvement on EMI's more expensive version of these exact same recordings (and a subtle improvement over Pearl's even pricier remastering). Here, you can finally turn ... |

Woody Allen Classics(more) »rank: 11229from: Sony
: :The first classical music I remember hearing was on movie soundtracks--the animated cartoons of my childhood in which the characters would chase, trick, and bash each other to the tunes of Liszt's Hungarian rhapsodies and overtures by Rossini and Suppe. This music was used not because it was great, but because it was full of action and out of copyright--a lot cheaper (and probably better) than hiring a living composer. Woody Allen may have a nobler motivation in his decision to use classics on his soundtracks, and his selection of music, from Bach to Prokofiev, is more sophisticated. This superbly miscellaneous ... |

Bach: Lute Works, Vol. 1(more) »rank: 41044from: Harmonia Mundi Fr.
: : Playing Bach's works for lute is always an interesting proposition. Invariably re-arranged from other instruments (one piece here was originally for cello, the other two for violin), they are notated in such a way that they would have been unplayable on a typical 18th-century instrument; therefore, Bach must have (or may have) presumed they would be transposed. At any rate, Paul O'Dette's new recording of some of the works (called 'Volume I') is a ravishing document – elegant, lovely, both easy on the ear and food for thought. These are not pieces of 18th-century wallpaper. The Fugue in the Sonata ... |
