Duruflé: Sacred Choral & Organ Works, Vol. 1(more) »rank: 161303from: Naxos
: :Ah, such pretty music. Durufle was one of those French mystical types--full of Gregorian chant-inspired melody. His organ music is thoroughly typical of his small but immaculately crafted output. The Scherzo is a real charmer, while the Prelude and fugue pays affectionate tribute to a talented colleague. His Requiem became so popular that the composer arranged it for every instrumental combination except perhaps kazoo orchestra. This version is the one featuring a big solo organ part (with chamber orchestra), and it's well performed and recorded. Piquemal's vocal ensemble isn't the last word in polish, but they sing with enthusiasm and fans of the ... |

:Album Description:'If I had to choose the four greatest voices I’ve heard, I would list Thomas along with Enrico Caruso, Rosa Ponselle, and Ezio Pinza.' -FRANK CHAPMAN, OPERA NEWS During his forty-eight year career, music critics ranked John Charles Thomas with Enrico Caruso, hailing him as one of the great voices of the twentieth century. One critic wrote, 'I have seen a good many so-called enthralled audiences during my earthly career, I have seen them stand up and clap. I have heard them cheer. Mozart - Requiem / McLaughlin, M. Ewing, Hauptmann, Bayerischen Rundfunks, Bernstein(more) »rank: 66177by: Bayerischen Rundfunks
: :As with his performance of the Mass in C Minor with these same forces, Leonard Bernstein provides another outstanding performance, certainly one of the very finest available of this oft-recorded music. Without indulging in the sort of Romantic mannerisms that sometimes afflict his Mozart, Bernstein urges his Bavarian forces on to heights of passion and intensity that never upset the music's natural proportions. A magnificent disc. --David Hurwitz |

James Galway: Wings of Song(more) »rank: 80643from: Deutsche Grammophon
: :This is James Galway's first CD with a new label, and it presents him at his most lyrical. Every selection is long-melodied and soothingly played, including an interesting transcription of the 2nd movement of Rodrigo's Concerto de Aranjuez. Who would have guessed that a flute could substitute so handsomely for a guitar? Schubert's 'Ave Maria' is mellow and sweet, Brahms's 'Lullaby' is nicely accented, and he's well-matched with his wife in the 'Barcarolle' from The Tales of Hoffmann. Two bonus tracks offer the world premiere of a haunting suite from The Lord of the Rings trilogy, composed by Howard Shore, and a new ... |
