Nancarrow: Studies for Player Piano(more) »rank: 55984from: Wergo Germany
: :To speak of Conlon Nancarrow's music for player piano shouldn't be mistaken to suggest some still broader range of musical output of which the composer's piano rolls are but a subset. Quite the contrary: Nancarrow's meticulous scores--generally unplayable, at least by most primates--are the body of his life's work. This five-CD set contains dozens upon dozens of his studies, each a fairly self-contained exploration of tempo, pitch, rhythm, counterpoint--and the interaction between pairings of those core musical categories. Certainly, this is 'difficult' music, hard on the ears, off-kilter in a manner that both demands attention and may repulse listeners unfamiliar with experimental composition. ... |

Habaneras, Milongas, Tangos(more) »rank: 81400from: Romeo Records
: :Uruguayan pianist Polly Ferman has made a specialty of the piano music of South America. Her previous CDs of music by Ernesto Nazareth and Ernesto Lecuona were thoroughly delightful. Now she offers a wide-ranging program of mostly brief, dance-based piano music in forms from South America, although written by composers from many countries. You have to follow the track listing inside the booklet (the listing on the tray card is virtually illegible) to find out whether the delightful piece you are hearing was written by Gottschalk, Chabrier, Stravinsky, Weill, or Ginastera. But whatever the music, it's all entertaining and sometimes (as with Piazzolla) ... |

Stravinsky / Bach(more) »rank: 106240from: Ecm Records
: :This record represents an interesting combination of styles: two works by Stravinsky, one neo-classical (Duo concertante--1932)and one quasi-baroque (Suite Italienne--1933), based on themes by Pergolesi and taken from his ballet Pulcinella, both for violin and piano. There are also two authentic baroque works: Bach's G-minor Sonata and B-minor Partita for unaccompanied violin. The program alternates the two composers, beginning with the least-accessible work, the Duo, which, with its wildly conflicting textures, cross-rhythms, meters and accents, sometimes sounds as if the performers were playing two different pieces simultaneously. Ferociously difficult, its three fast movements are dissonant, abrasive, and percussive, but the two slow ones ... |
